Gibernau to return to action in Ducati test

After over 18 months away from riding a MotoGP bike, former World Championship runner-up Sete Gibernau will make his return to action next week with Ducati. The Spaniard will test both the Desmosedici GP8 and GP9 at the Mugello circuit, alongside official test rider Vittoriano Guareschi.

The possibility of Gibernau aiding the Italian factory´s development program was raised last weekend, when the retired rider was present in the paddock at the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya. Ducati were receptive to the offer, and will gather data and feedback from Gibernau in a three day run from June 17th-19th.

I´m honoured by this possibility that Ducati has given me,´ said Gibernau. `I´m very excited and I´m in perfect shape, even if it has been a while since I have been on a GP bike. It is just a test but I´ll give my absolute maximum. I can´t wait to enjoy once again the feeling of bringing a MotoGP machine to its limit.´

Gibernau´s last ride with Ducati machinery was in October 2006, at the Portuguese round of his solitary year with the Italian factory. An injury suffered in a collision with current Ducati Marlboro rider Casey Stoner drew his season to a premature end on that occasion, and the veteran announced his retirement soon after.

`We were happy to see Sete so excited at the possibility of riding a MotoGP bike again, and it was this enthusiasm that led to the possibility of organising this test together´, said General Director of Ducati Corse Filippo Preziosi, present in Catalunya to watch the first regular rider tests of the GP9. He also hailed the progression afforded by the addition of Gibernau to the testing lineup.

`The tests we carried out with the GP9 in Catalunya earlier this week gave good feedback and, by having Sete and Vito testing alongside each other, we will be able to carry out a wide range of more intensive tests with our GP8 and GP9 machines.´

Another Ducati test rider, Niccolo Canepa, will next week test Bridgestone tyres at Brno in the Czech Republic. Ducati´s plans for the season involve regular monthly tests, although whether Gibernau´s participation in the program will be repeated further along the line remains to be seen.

Catalunya test ends early due to thunderstorms

The reigning World Champion Casey Stoner left the Circuit de Catalunya on top of the timesheets again, as Tuesday´s testing ended earlier than scheduled due to storms.

Bad weather at the Montmelo circuit just to the north of Barcelona saw a second day of post-Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya testing brought to an early end at around 4.45pm due to a thunderstorm, with Casey Stoner sitting at the head of the timesheet.

There were just seven regular MotoGP riders in attendance and with the likes of Valentino Rossi, Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo not in attendance, Stoner led the way from second quickest rider Andrea Dovizioso by less than a tenth of a second with a best time of 1´42.180 – not quite matching his own pace from Monday, possibly due to the unfavourable conditions.

The day had started slowly due to light rain in the morning, but there was plenty of work for third fastest rider Nicky Hayden to do as he worked alone on the new pneumatic valve engine, following Pedrosa´s departure on Monday with a back injury sustained in a highside crash on a standard RC212V. Hayden usually enjoys marathon test efforts, but was limited to 43 laps by the unseasonal Spanish climate.

Fourth placed on the timesheet was Chris Vermeulen, with positive comments coming from the Rizla Suzuki garage as he put in a best time of 1´42.555 on the ever-evolving 800cc GSV-R prototype.

LCR Honda´s Randy de Puniet rounded off the top five as he attempted to renew his confidence following yet another crash on Sunday, while there was a Ducati test rider in the form of Niccolo Canepa in sixth place, just ahead of the Italian firm´s satellite Alice riders Sylvain Guintoli and Toni Elias.

Additional test riders Aoki Nobuatsu (Suzuki), Olivier Jacque (Kawasaki), Erwan Nigon (HRC) and Vittoriano Guareschi (Ducati) also featured in the proceedings, with the aforementioned Canepa and Guareschi helping Stoner with the development of the new Desmosedici GP9.

Further details and analysis of the Catalunya test, in addition to exclusive interviews from the riders, will feature on motogp.com in the next 24 hours.

Positive debut for Desmosedici GP9 with Casey Stoner

With uncertain weather forecasts for tomorrow, Stoner and test riders Vittoriano Guareschi and Niccoló Canepa put the machine through its paces, whilst Marco Melandri spent the day focusing on his GP8 and will test it tomorrow.

It was a positive debut for the machine in the hands of the World Champion, so much so that the Australian set the best time of the day with a 1´41.533 on qualifying tyres.

CASEY STONER - Best lap on race tyres - 1´42.632; on qualifiers - 1´41.533

´I´m happy with the way today has gone. The objective was to understand whether this new chassis concept has potential and I´d say that for now it looks to be the case. We were quickly into some decent times using the same set-up as the GP8. We barely changed anything to adapt it to the characteristics of the GP9 and I immediately felt an improvement so that is positive. I´m sure that with more time to work on it we can go much faster, although that is not the current brief. We´ll have time to test it in the winter. Tomorrow we´ll get back on my GP8 because we have some important tyre testing to do. There is still a lot of the 2008 season left and we want to be competitive.´

MARCO MELANDRI - Best lap on race times - 1´44.326

´We have done a lot of tests with the electronics, set-up and tyres. I´ve found a rear tyre that gives me a better feeling but we´re still a long way from where we need to be. We still need to find something to get back to the kind of feeling I had in China.´

FILIPPO PREZIOSI - General Manager Ducati Corse

´We took the decision to allow the factory riders to test the GP9 because it would have been more difficult at a later stage of development and eventually we´d have had to go backwards in certain areas. There are some things that are possible to analyse with data such as in the engine or the cycle part but other areas where it is absolutely essential to have the riders´ opinions. So it was important to get their feedback to understand if the choices we´ve made have been the right ones and to get their suggestions. Some changes we´ve made to the cycle part could seem more revolutionary than others but in reality we continue to evolve the initial concept that we designed with the GP3. So it´s not a change in the direction of development, but another step forward in the same direction. With the 990 the seat supports and the footpegs were attached to the frame. With the 800 they are both completely separate and on the GP9 the front part is even more dedicated to support and the dimensions become more limited. The fact we´ve used carbon fibre in the production of the chassis is not the most relevant point, it is more the shape that is different from before. Casey´s first impressions have been positive. Tomorrow Marco will try it and I hope his feeling with the new bike is better than with the current one.´

Bravo Netherlands

The Netherlands ended a 30-year wait for a victory over Italy in emphatic fashion as they began their Group C campaign with a rousing 3-0 win against the world champions in Berne.

Worst EURO defeat
Ruud van Nistelrooy side-footed the Oranje ahead in the 26th minute, a lead doubled superbly by his Real Madrid CF colleague Wesley Sneijder soon after. Edwin van der Sar, becoming only the third player to appear in four UEFA European Championships, then kept the advantage intact, leaving Giovanni van Bronckhorst to complete the scoring with a headed third in the 79th minute. The Netherlands can now look forward with confidence to Friday's meeting with France, while Italy must pick themselves up from a worst-ever EURO defeat when they face Romania.

Dutch dominant
The early skirmishes gave scant indication of what was to come. Andrea Pirlo dispossessed Van Bronckhorst with an exquisite tackle and freed Antonio Di Natale but his pass lacked the precision to pick out Luca Toni. The FC Bayern München striker did get a glimpse of goal in the 12th minute, rising to flick a header wide from an equally promising position, yet that was about as close as the world champions got in a first half subsequently dominated by Marco van Basten's side. Dirk Kuyt, ever willing on the right flank, outmuscled Gianluca Zambrotta in the 18th minute and slipped a delicious low ball to Van Nistelrooy who touched it beyond the outrushing Gianluigi Buffon but stayed on his feet after making contact with the Italy captain. That was the last act of charity from the Dutch, as Roberto Donadoni's team paid for the concession of a number of free-kicks on the periphery of their area.

Opening goal
Sneijder first fizzed one set-piece in from the left which Marco Materazzi headed clear. Then Rafael van der Vaart did likewise from the right, the scrambling Buffon's punched clearance eventually reaching birthday boy Sneijder whose powerful drive from the corner of the box was side-footed in by Van Nistelrooy as the Azzurri defence appealed for offside. Italy went close to levelling from an inswinging corner five minutes later yet were caught flat-footed in the 31st minute when Van Bronckhorst, who had cleared off the line, was able to charge half the length of the field unchallenged.

Probing Sneijder
The Feyenoord man made the most of the time afforded him, pinging a perfect crossfield ball to Kuyt whose cushioned header was spectacularly hooked inside Buffon's near post by the leaping Sneijder. Italy's three-man midfield of Gennaro Gattuso, Pirlo and Massimo Ambrosini could not contain Sneijder as he probed the left side, creating space for Van Bronckhorst. The full-back was able all too easily to dissect an Azzurri back line missing injured captain Fabio Cannavaro with a pass that released Van Nistelrooy on goal. Buffon stood tall, however, clipping the shot over with his feet.

Van der Sar saves
Italy sought a way back into the match after the break. Substitute Alessandro Del Piero failed to profit from two half-chances before Toni lofted a shot over when free on the penalty spot on 76 minutes. Van der Sar then foiled Fabio Grosso at close range before diving at full stretch to keep out a Pirlo free-kick, leaving Van Bronckhorst to wrap things up at the other end following smart work by Kuyt. The last time the Netherlands beat Italy they went on to reach the 1978 FIFA World Cup final – a lucky omen as they look to claim a first European crown since their coach volleyed them to glory in 1988.

The winner of GP Catalunya

A breakaway plan from Dani Pedrosa worked to perfection in the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya, as he took the holeshot at his home race and never looked back. The win ended a long premier class run without a local winner in Barcelona, stretching back to 1999 and a popular triumph for Alex Criville in the 500cc category.

Keen to avoid a battle between himself and predicted podium finishers Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi, the Repsol Honda rider burst out of the blocks and set about putting space between himself and the rest of the field. A new circuit record was made by Pedrosa by the second lap, and he kept the pace up throughout the 25 lap race.

A fourth consecutive win proved a wish too far for Fiat Yamaha star Rossi, who nonetheless fulfilled expectations by fighting his way up from ninth on the grid. A penultimate lap slipstream of Stoner gave him second place, a sixth consecutive podium and, most importantly, the advantage necessary to maintain the lead in the MotoGP World Championship.

Andrea Dovizioso was spot on in his Saturday prediction, having noted that all three of last year´s rostrum finishers would repeat their form in 2008. What the JiR Team Scot rider was not so sure about was his own form, but a fourth place –equalling his previous best MotoGP finish from Qatar- was a remarkable performance for the highest placing satellite rider.

As in qualifying, the Tech 3 Yamaha pairing of Colin Edwards and James Toseland took fifth and sixth place, respectively, with the latter holding off Rizla Suzuki´s Chris Vermeulen. In a sprint to the line. Nicky Hayden, Shinya Nakano and John Hopkins completed the first ten past the chequered flag.

The race was littered with retirements at the midway point, with Alex de Angelis, Loris Capirossi and Randy de Puniet all crashing out in quick succession. Toni Elias had just a few laps earlier been shown the black flag for not obeying an order for a ride-through penalty.

The national emblem of the United States, the Bald Eagle was threatened with extinction in the lower 48 states because of DDT (a type of pesticide) poisoning. Protection under the Endangered Species Act, together with reintroduction programs, brought populations up, and the species was reclassified as Threatened in 1995. By 1999, some were suggesting removing the eagle from the Endangered Species List.

Cool Facts

  • Humans are the most important source of mortality for this threatened species.
  • Bald Eagles occasionally hunt cooperatively, with one individual flushing prey towards another.
  • The immature Bald Eagle has a prolonged period of exploration lasting for four years. Some young from Florida have wandered north to Michigan, and birds from California have reached Alaska.

Description

  • Size: 71-96 cm (28-38 in)
  • Wingspan: 204 cm (80 in)
  • Weight: 3000-6300 g (105.9-222.39 ounces)
  • Very large raptor.
  • Adults unmistakable with brown body and white head and tail.
  • Bill large and hooked.
  • Long broad wings held flat while soaring.
  • Adult with body evenly dark brown.
  • Head white.
  • Tail white.
  • Long hooked bill yellow, cere yellow.
  • Eyes yellow.
  • Tail moderately long, slightly wedge-shaped.
  • Feet yellow.
  • Legs yellow and unfeathered.
  • Immatures variably dark with white scattered throughout plumage.

Sex Differences

Sexes alike in plumage, female larger.

Immature

Immature variably patterned with dark brown and white; takes five years to acquire full adult plumage. White not restricted to well defined areas, but appearing scattered throughout body, usually with brown mottling in same area. White in wings primarily in linings and not flight feathers. Bill and cere blackish gray. Eyes dark brown. Feet and lower legs yellow.

Similar Species

  • Golden Eagle has feathered legs, white limited to flight feathers, and soars with the outer part of the wings lifted in a slight dihedral.

Sound

Call high-pitched whistling or piping.

»listen to songs of this species

Winter Range

Winters in coastal Alaska and Canada, and throughout lower 48 states.

Habitat

  • Breeds in forested areas near large bodies of water.
  • Winters in coastal areas, along large rivers, and large unfrozen lakes.

Food

Opportunistic feeder, but prefers fish. Eats large birds, mammals, and carrion.

Behavior

Foraging

Gets food by direct capture, scavenging, and stealing prey from other eagles or other birds and mammals. Will wade in water to catch fish.

Courtship

Engages in spectacular flight displays. In the Cartwheel Display, a courting pair flies to high altitude, locks feet together, and then tumbles and cartwheels toward the ground, breaking off at the last moment.

Reproduction

Nest Type

Large nest of sticks. Lined with finer woody materials. Reused over many years. Placed in large tree, often the largest in the area. Rarely nests on ground or cliff.

Egg Description

Dull white, usually without markings.

Clutch Size

Usually 2 eggs. Range: 1-3.

Condition at Hatching

Capable of limited motion. Covered with light gray down and with eyes open.

Conservation Status

Preservation efforts brought populations in the lower 48 states back from near exinction in the mid-20th century. Although the Bald Eagle was proposed for removal from the Endangered species List in 1999, populations in the lower 48 states remain relatively low. Humans are the most important source of mortality.

Other Names

Pygargue à tête blanche (French)
Águila cabeza blanca (Spanish)

Buehler, D. A. 2000. Bald Eagle (Halieaeetus leucocephalus). In The Birds of North America, No. 564 (A. Poole and F. Gill, eds.). The Birds of North America, Inc., Philadelphia, PA.

On the eve of the 2008 edition of the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya, last year´s top three finishers were all present at the pre-event press conference to talk about past, present and future for the Barcelona visit.

Casey Stoner, currently on the back foot in his quest to retain the MotoGP World Championship crown, finds himself in a very different scenario to this time last season. He was the winner of the three-way tussle in 2007, extending his lead in the standings, but now finds himself playing catch-up from fourth place.

`This has always been one of my favourite tracks, even when I started riding in the Spanish Championship,´ said Stoner, whose 2007 triumph was his first Grand Prix win in northeast Spain.

`Right now we´re not chasing the championship; we´re just taking things race-by-race in kind of the same way that we did last year. Right now we have nothing to lose except for more points, so we´re just going to do what we can.´

Valentino Rossi, current leader of the World Championship and on a three-race winning streak, lost out to Stoner in last year´s thriller. He acknowledged the fine form in which he finds himself, and sees no reason why things can´t work as well as in Mugello just one week ago.

`We are coming from a positive period, and this is also a circuit that I like,´ said the Fiat Yamaha man. `For this track we can use a similar setting to what we ran in Mugello, but we will wait until tomorrow to adapt it. The last race here was a great battle, with a lot of overtaking.´

Whilst joining in the plaudits for the 2007 race, home rider Dani Pedrosa also made his affections for the track known. In addition, the Spaniard confirmed that Repsol Honda will not be running the pneumatic-valve engine in Catalunya until Monday´s post-race test.

`This track is a special place, close to home. Last time it was probably the best race of the year, but I wasn´t really involved so much at the end,´ admitted Pedrosa. `I will probably not be using the pneumatic valve engine here. I think that it will be clearer and more intelligent to use it in the Monday test.
